Max Payne 3 – Preview

By -

Max Payne 3 is the first game in the Max Payne franchise to be developed by Rockstar, and judging by the screenshots, videos and fact sheets I have seen thus far, it’s looking to be one of the most exciting games of the year.

Max Payne 3 is set in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Max has accepted a job from Raul Passos. a former colleague from his police academy days.  If you have played any of the previous games, you might remember that Max spends his days drinking and his days popping pills. He is no longer the cop he once was, and he has lost his connection to New York. It’s fitting therefor when Passos creates chain of events forcing Max to leave the city.

The game includes all the key features that make the Max Payne series what it is. James McCaffery’s voiceovers, graphic novel cutscenes, and of course, Bullet Time, one of the core gameplay mechanics. It influences everything from physics and animation to the level of detail in each gun. Bullet Time will give players the sensation of actually reacting to every single bullet fired.

Bullet Time is a fundamental feature of Max Payne 3 since it affects almost every design decision in the game, from movement to AI, to weapons to audio. Rockstar truly upped their game with some of the upgrades.

The first upgrade you will notice is the Realistic Shoot-dodge mechanic. Natural Motion’s Euphoria engine allows Max to react more realistically to his environment. This will be noticeable when he braces for impact before Shoot-dodging into or over obstacles.

Players of the original games may remember bullet-cams. In Max Payne 3, the bullet-cams have become “Final-kill” cams, so when the last enemy in an area is killed you will get a small cutscene type event where you can control the speed of the bullets. Depending on how you take the shot, you will see the kill from a different angle.

Max Payne 3 includes a multiplayer mode as well. There are two modes which have been announced so far, Gang War and Payne Killer.

Max Payne 3 is out on the 15th of May for North America and the 18th of May for Europe and Asia. The game will be released for PC two weeks later.

I am really interested in RPG style games, something where you can upgrade your character and weapons. I also like FPS games. Currently playing: Fifa 14, BattleField 4 and F1 2013.
